Who each one suits
Choose Codara Cloud if
- You want a bill that cannot run away. Fly.io bills usage with no soft ceiling and says it does not support billing alerts yet; on Codara Cloud an action past a plan limit is refused, not billed.
- You want Postgres inside the price. Fly.io’s Managed Postgres starts at $38 a month; Codara Cloud includes managed databases in every plan’s capacity.
- You want cron as a first-class job with any cron expression. Fly.io has no built-in cron service and points to Scheduled Machines, Supercronic or a separate Cron Manager app.
- You run several small projects and want them to share one plan, hosted by a European company with data stored in the EU.
Choose Fly.io if
- Your users are spread around the world. Fly.io runs in 17 regions, so you can place Machines near them; Codara Cloud runs only in Helsinki today.
- Your app is idle most of the time. Fly.io can stop or suspend Machines when there is no traffic, and you do not pay for their CPU and RAM while they are stopped.
- You want low-level control over Machines, volumes and networking through flyctl and fly.toml.
- You want to start today with open sign-up. Codara Cloud is invitation-only while in beta.
Side by side
| Feature | Codara Cloud | Fly.io |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Fixed monthly price per organization: Starter €5, Standard €20, Pro €50, Scale €100, before tax. Several projects share one plan’s capacity. | Usage-based, with no plans for Machines. Compute is billed by the second: a shared-cpu-1x Machine with 256 MB is $1.94/month in Ashburn (iad) and $2.24 in Frankfurt; each extra GB of RAM is $5/month. Volumes $0.15/GB-month. |
| Small app: web service + Postgres + daily cron | €5/month on Starter if the web service and job fit in its shared 0.5 vCPU / 512 MiB and one shared Postgres database is enough (it reserves 10 GiB, all of Starter’s storage). €20/month on Standard for 1 vCPU / 2 GiB and 20 GiB. | About $42/month in Frankfurt with Managed Postgres, by our arithmetic from list prices: about $3.68 for a 512 MB Machine plus $38 for the Basic Postgres plan, before storage and egress. |
| Usage above the plan | No automatic usage overage. An action past a plan limit is refused, not billed. Outgoing transfer is included under fair use. | Billed automatically. Fly.io says there is no soft ceiling and it does not support billing alerts yet. |
| Free tier or trial | No free tier. Beta by invitation: the first month is free on any plan, or the first 3 months if you join our Discord (card required); Starter adds a 7-day trial first. | No free plan. A trial of 2 hours of Machine runtime or 7 days, whichever comes first; trial Machines stop after 5 minutes. Organizations need a card on file. |
| Databases | Managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Redis and MongoDB inside the plan. Supported backups are kept for up to 7 days. | Managed Postgres from $38/month (Basic: shared-2x, 1 GB) plus $0.28/GB of storage, with high availability, backups and connection pooling. The older unmanaged Fly Postgres is no longer maintained or supported. |
| Cron and background work | Scheduled (any cron expression) and one-off jobs, plus always-on workers. They use the plan’s capacity. | No built-in cron service. The documented options are Scheduled Machines (hourly, daily, weekly or monthly, not for precise timing), Supercronic inside your app, or a separate Cron Manager app. |
| Regions and data location | One region: Helsinki, Finland (Hetzner Cloud). Apps, databases and backups are stored in the EU. | 17 regions worldwide. In Europe: Amsterdam, Stockholm, Paris, Frankfurt and London. Managed Postgres in Europe is offered in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London. |
| Deploy from | GitHub repository, container image, or a folder, ZIP or HTML file through the MCP tools. Dockerfile, Railpack, Nixpacks or static builds. | flyctl: fly launch detects many frameworks; fly deploy builds from a Dockerfile, a buildpack or a prebuilt image. Deploys from GitHub run through GitHub Actions with a deploy token. |
| CLI, MCP and AI agents | codaracloud CLI, HTTP API and a local MCP server for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and other MCP clients. Agent tokens are development-only by default. | flyctl, and an experimental MCP server (fly mcp server) for Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other clients. |
| Availability | Beta, by invitation. A new product from Codara Solutions SL (Madrid). | Generally available, open sign-up. Paid support plans from $29/month. |
What a small app costs
Take a small app: one web service with about 512 MB of memory running all month, a small Postgres database and a cron job that runs a few minutes a day.
On Codara Cloud it costs €5 a month on Starter if the web service and the job fit within Starter’s shared 0.5 vCPU and 512 MiB, and one shared Postgres database is enough. That database reserves 10 GiB, all of Starter’s persistent storage. With more headroom it costs €20 on Standard. Neither price grows with traffic.
On Fly.io, a shared-cpu-1x Machine is $1.94 a month with 256 MB in Ashburn, and each extra GB of RAM adds $5. By our arithmetic, 512 MB comes to about $3.19 there and about $3.68 in Frankfurt, where prices are 15.4% higher. Managed Postgres adds at least $38 a month plus $0.28 per GB of storage. A scheduled Machine for the cron job costs cents, and egress in Europe is $0.02/GB. That is about $42 a month before storage and egress. Running Postgres yourself on a Machine with a volume costs less, but Fly.io no longer supports its unmanaged Postgres, so you operate it yourself.
Codara Cloud prices are in euros before tax. Fly.io publishes prices in US dollars, excluding tax; we have not converted them.
How to move a project over
A Fly.io app with a Dockerfile moves over most directly: Codara builds a root Dockerfile as written. Settings in fly.toml, such as the internal port, health checks and a release command, do not carry over; set the port, health check path and a pre-deploy command on the Codara app instead.
- Write down what runs today: each service with its start command and port, the database, cron schedules, volumes and environment variables. The deployment inventory in our guide is a good template. Full steps in the docs
- Get access. Codara Cloud is in beta: request an invitation, then create a project; it comes with a production environment. Full steps in the docs
- Create the app from the same GitHub repository or container image. A root Dockerfile is used as written; otherwise Codara detects Railpack, Nixpacks or a static build. Full steps in the docs
- Copy runtime environment variables and secrets. Build arguments are never for secrets. Full steps in the docs
- Create the database, export your data with pg_dump (or your engine’s dump tool) and import the dump from an HTTPS URL through the API or MCP tools. Postgres and MariaDB imports are supported. Full steps in the docs
- Recreate scheduled tasks as Codara jobs with the same cron expression, usually running the same image as the app. Full steps in the docs
- Test on a staging environment with test data, then point your custom domain at Codara. Keep the old service running until the new one is verified. Full steps in the docs
Questions
- Is Codara Cloud cheaper than Fly.io?
- For an always-on app with a managed Postgres database, usually: Fly.io’s Managed Postgres alone starts at $38 a month, while Codara Cloud’s €5 or €20 plan includes the database. For an app that sleeps most of the day without a managed database, Fly.io’s per-second billing can cost less. Compare with your own usage.
- Does Fly.io have regions in the EU?
- Yes: Amsterdam, Stockholm, Paris and Frankfurt, plus London outside the EU. Codara Cloud runs only in Helsinki today.
- Does Fly.io have a free tier?
- No. New organizations get a trial of 2 hours of Machine runtime or 7 days, whichever comes first. Codara Cloud has no free tier either: while in beta, the first month is free on any plan, or the first 3 months if you join our Discord.
