Codara Cloud vs Netlify

Netlify hosts frontends on a global CDN and runs server code as functions, on credit-based plans from free to $20 a month; when the credits run out, your projects pause. Codara Cloud runs long-lived servers, databases, workers and cron jobs together in Helsinki for a fixed €5 to €100 a month. Choose Netlify for static sites and frontends with light server logic, a free plan and deploy previews. Choose Codara Cloud when your app needs an always-on server, background work or a database next to it in the EU.

Who each one suits

Choose Codara Cloud if

  • Your backend is a long-running server, such as Express, FastAPI or Django, or holds WebSocket connections. Netlify runs server code as functions: 60 seconds for a synchronous call, 15 minutes for a background function.
  • You have scheduled work that runs longer than 30 seconds, Netlify’s limit for scheduled functions, or an always-on worker.
  • You want everything to run in the EU. Netlify functions run in US East (Ohio) by default, and choosing another region needs Pro or Enterprise.
  • You want your site to keep serving when a monthly allowance runs out. On Netlify, running out of credits pauses your projects unless auto recharge is on; on Codara Cloud, running apps keep serving and new work past a plan limit is refused.

Choose Netlify if

  • You are hosting a static site or a frontend that calls other APIs. Netlify serves it from a global CDN, with a branch deploy for every pull request.
  • You want a free plan: Netlify Free includes 300 credits a month with a hard limit, so it cannot incur costs.
  • You deploy from GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps, or want drag-and-drop deploys. Codara Cloud builds from GitHub, container images or uploaded files.
  • You want to start today with open sign-up. Codara Cloud is invitation-only while in beta.

Pricing modelFixed monthly price per organization: Starter €5, Standard €20, Pro €50, Scale €100, before tax. Several projects share one plan’s capacity.Credit-based: Free $0 (300 credits/month), Personal $9/month (1,000 credits), Pro $20/month (3,000 credits). Credits pay for production deploys (15 each), compute (10 per GB-hour), bandwidth (20 per GB) and web requests (2 per 10,000).
Small app: web service + Postgres + daily cron€5/month on Starter if the web service and job fit in its shared 0.5 vCPU / 512 MiB and one shared Postgres database is enough (it reserves 10 GiB, all of Starter’s storage). €20/month on Standard for 1 vCPU / 2 GiB and 20 GiB.Not a like-for-like fit: there is no always-on web service, so the API runs as functions and the cron job as a scheduled function limited to 30 seconds. The database is Netlify Database, which uses the same credits. The cost depends on credits used.
Usage above the planNo automatic usage overage. An action past a plan limit is refused, not billed. Outgoing transfer is included under fair use. When credits run out, projects are paused and visitors see “Site not available” until credits are added or the next cycle starts. Auto recharge is off by default: Personal buys 500 credits for $5, Pro 1,500 for $10.
Free tier or trialNo free tier. Beta by invitation: the first month is free on any plan, or the first 3 months if you join our Discord (card required); Starter adds a 7-day trial first.Free plan: 300 credits a month with a hard limit, 1 member and 1 concurrent build.
DatabasesManaged PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Redis and MongoDB inside the plan. Supported backups are kept for up to 7 days.Netlify Database: managed Postgres built into the platform, on credit-based plans, with a database branch per deploy preview. Compute is capped at 1 unit on Free, 4 on Personal and 16 on Pro; only Pro can keep it always on, and on Free and Personal it sleeps after 5 minutes idle.
Cron and background workScheduled (any cron expression) and one-off jobs, plus always-on workers. They use the plan’s capacity.Scheduled Functions with a 30-second execution limit, and Background Functions that run up to 15 minutes. No always-on worker process.

What a small app costs

Take a small app: one web service running all the time, a small Postgres database and a cron job that runs a few minutes a day.

On Codara Cloud it costs €5 a month on Starter if the web service and the job fit within Starter’s shared 0.5 vCPU and 512 MiB, and one shared Postgres database is enough. That database reserves 10 GiB, all of Starter’s persistent storage. With more headroom it costs €20 on Standard. Neither price grows with traffic.

Netlify is built differently, so the same app has to change shape there. The web service becomes functions, which run per request for up to 60 seconds. A cron job that runs for minutes does not fit a scheduled function’s 30-second limit; it has to be split into shorter runs or handed to a background function, which can run for up to 15 minutes. The database would be Netlify Database. Everything draws on the plan’s credits: for example, 20 GB of bandwidth uses 400 credits and 10 production deploys use 150, out of 1,000 on Personal ($9) or 3,000 on Pro ($20). We give no single figure because it depends on your traffic and compute.

Codara Cloud prices are in euros before tax. Netlify publishes prices in US dollars; we have not converted them.

How to move a project over

A Netlify site usually has a frontend build and functions. On Codara Cloud, a static frontend can be deployed as a static build, and server code runs as an ordinary web service: move function handlers into a small server (Express, Fastify or your framework’s own server) that listens on PORT. Scheduled functions become Codara jobs.

  1. Write down what runs today: each service with its start command and port, the database, cron schedules, volumes and environment variables. The deployment inventory in our guide is a good template. Full steps in the docs
  2. Get access. Codara Cloud is in beta: request an invitation, then create a project; it comes with a production environment. Full steps in the docs
  3. Create the app from the same GitHub repository or container image. A root Dockerfile is used as written; otherwise Codara detects Railpack, Nixpacks or a static build. Full steps in the docs
  4. Copy runtime environment variables and secrets. Build arguments are never for secrets. Full steps in the docs
  5. Create the database, export your data with pg_dump (or your engine’s dump tool) and import the dump from an HTTPS URL through the API or MCP tools. Postgres and MariaDB imports are supported. Full steps in the docs
  6. Recreate scheduled tasks as Codara jobs with the same cron expression, usually running the same image as the app. Full steps in the docs
  7. Test on a staging environment with test data, then point your custom domain at Codara. Keep the old service running until the new one is verified. Full steps in the docs

Questions

Can Netlify run an Express server?
Netlify runs server code as functions: synchronous functions time out after 60 seconds and background functions after 15 minutes. Its documentation does not offer a long-running server process. Codara Cloud runs your Express app as an always-on container.
Does Netlify host in Europe?
Static content is served from Netlify’s global CDN. Functions run in US East (Ohio) by default; on Pro or Enterprise you can choose Frankfurt, Dublin or London. Codara Cloud runs apps, databases and jobs in Helsinki and stores their data in the EU.
Is Netlify free?
Netlify has a Free plan with 300 credits a month and a hard limit. Codara Cloud has no free plan: while in beta, the first month is free on any plan, or the first 3 months if you join our Discord.
